“Qingyu Charity”International Volunteer Service Team

Come from Hangzhou News: On this National Day, Hangzhou Hubin Commercial Circle had painted an international "wall of people".

At 19:07, the first performance of the West Lake Music Fountain was coming to an end. At this time, about 50 people wearing red, blue and yellow vests shoulder to shoulder, held hands with each other at the Pinghai intersection of Yan'anRoad.Anatural "human wall" came up with the trend. And this "humanwall" was also preparing to "resist" the largest wave oftraffic coming to the Hubincommercial circle.

At 19:13, "Go back and retreat.Everyone pays attention to safety!",thePinghai intersection of Yan'an Road, which was crowded, was already a black pressure. When the green light at the intersection changed, the crowd was automatically dispersed from all directions, and pedestrians crossed the road. The task of "people wall" came to an end.

The first "human wall" in Chinawas the freshest landscape in Hangzhou this year. The "vests" that made up the "human wall" were the volunteers of the ShangchengQingyu charity team.

It is understood that during the National Day, the peak number of tourists in the Hubin commercial circle reached nearly 140,000,and more than 320 volunteers volunteered for traffic command in the Hubin commercial circle. Among them, there were 150 foreign volunteers from 10 countries including Mexico, Peru, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Yemen and Kyrgyzstan. They wore the red vests of the Citizens Police School Foreign Language Volunteer Service. They were at the two most crowded intersections of Yan'an Road and Pinghai Road, together with Chinese volunteers, assisting the police in the Shangcheng to carry out order maintenance work.

Millay from Zimbabwe came to China last year. Hangzhou was his preferred city for studying abroad. The scenery in Hangzhou is particularly beautiful. The West Lake and the Grand Canal are my favorite attractions.Millay, majoring in applied physics at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, has only been studying Chinese for a year.

In his hometown of Harare, Millay liked to do volunteer activities, such as participating in public welfare activities, going to the orphanage to teach children to draw, playing games with them, and so on. During his spare time in China, he would do free English public welfare teaching at MyHomie, a comprehensive foreign student service and social platform in Hangzhou.

Because of many volunteer activities, friends call Millay "Foreign Lei Feng". The first time he heard the name "Lei Feng", the 21-year-old Millay had afamiliar feeling: "Ah! I know! I know!". Hearing himself was called "Foreign Lei Feng", Millay also felt a little shame-making:"In my opinion, Lei Feng has done a good example and volunteerism is not dead. Our volunteers are the new generation of Lei Feng!"

Since the establishment of theQingyu CharityInternational Volunteer Service Team, Millay has participated in 6 duty missions. The seven-day duty in theHubincommercial circleon National Day has made Millay and other foreign volunteers truly feel the "superhuman flow" of Hangzhou.

When performing the task, Millay pointed to the direction of intersections of Dongpo Road and Pinghai Road and told us: "When I was there to direct traffic, there were two beautiful women who wanted to smash red lights. I stopped them and advised them, but they didn't understand what I said." At this point, Miley was somewhat helpless. "But then the police stopped them and asked them why they didn't listen to my advice. As a result, the two beautiful women came to apologize to me embarrassingly." After that, Mille was a little proud.

Ankara, who is 20 years old at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, is from Yemen. He is a boy who masters three languages. Ankara has participated in 4 volunteer activities, but every time he watched the electric cars and bicycles at the intersections of Yan'an Road and Pinghai Road, he was particularly flustered. Why? It's really too fast! Ankara said: "When I wait for the red light, I will chat with them and tell them to ride the electric car slowly. Some pedestrians would play with the mobile phone, and I would tell themwatch the road and not to play with the mobile phone ." In Hangzhou, besides commanding traffic in Chinese, Ankara also guided international friends who came to Hangzhou to travel in Arabic and English. From the beginning, he could not tell which road to take, but now he can quickly point to the location of the nearest subway station and bus station ,and even where the student's road could be drawn in one minute, whichwas exactly what a "new Hangzhou person" looks like.

Wu Shuping, the “backbone” of the volunteer team, felt that when they are on duty with foreign volunteers, they would also find some of their advantages: “For example, once Bao Xiaobao,a student from Ghana, saw a young man trying to run the red light, and held him directly from behind. He also asked,"Are you in a hurry?"The accent was particularly amusing. "Because the Mandarin accent of foreign friends is not standard, it wouldproduce more interesting contrast effect when persuading pedestrians." Wu Shuping said.

It is understood that among the Qingyu charity volunteers, the youngest is a 10-year-old primary school student, and the oldest is a 67-year-old retired worker. On Saturdays and Sundays starting from 2015, volunteers would direct traffic in Hangzhou's busiest Hubincommercial circle. From the initial 8 people to more than 1,000 people now, Shen Tingchong, the secretary general of the Shangcheng District Volunteers Association, is deeply touched:"Beautiful Hangzhou can not be separated from the hard work of all people, not only our international volunteers, all the volunteers in our team hope to motivate the people of Hangzhou to participate in volunteer service."
