The project within our university under construction is a Network Space Steel Structure mixed with reinforced concrete to serve as a
Student’s Activities Center which is meant tosupplement sports infrastructure in the University.
The design company is the Architectural Design And Research Institute Co., LTD., Zhejiang University and the Supervising Company is Zhejiang Jiangnan Engineering Management Co.,LTD. The construction Unit is the Chinese Construction Group Co., LTD and theconstruction Area is 6810 square meters. The 15th grade students hope that they will be the first students who shake hands with the university president with their bachelor caps and gowns in the future.
The building has three floors and had a time limit for 400 Days from the day of commencement. To date, the Safety Goal as maintained is Zero Accident, Zero Harm and the Environmental Objective is Green Site. Work on the site was reported to be on schedule with all major works already completed.
The space frames or space structures are truss-like, lightweight rigid structure constructed from interlocking struts in a geometric pattern. Space frames can be used to span large areas with few interior supports. Like the truss, a space frame is strong because of the inherent rigidity of the triangle; flexing loads (bending moments) are transmitted as tension and compression loads along the length of each strut. Steel space frames provide great freedom of expression and composition as well as the possibility to evenly distribute loads along each rod and external constraints.
Knowledge obtained on this site visit enabled students supplement their class based knowledge obtained in Reinforced Concrete and Steel Structures among others.Students where then allowed to express their views and thoughts of the Space Structure as aligned to the project objective goal.
From a student perspective, the site visit enhanced a good correlation between the material and knowledge in the civil engineering field and the construction industry at large as obtained during class lectures. Good appreciation of the knowledge gained through visiting the construction project.
