In this lecture we will explore some of the social and technical problems that will be encountered and need to be overcome during the renewal process of old and debilitated urban spaces.

We will, in this lecture, be looking at ground breaking case studies from the Netherlands. Projects that paved the way for a new approach to urban renewal. An approach that is neither top-down guided by a grand and final vision nor the chaotic approach of a bottom-up approach.

Furthermore, we will explore how the lessons of these examples can inform you as an Architectural designer in your projects by examining the use of these lessons in a couple of research projects in the context of Shanghai, China.
